Fall in Love with the JVA
“Fall in Love” is a
journey taken by an outstanding group of professional musicians who have come
together to present traditional vocal favorites and modern masterworks. The
program will open with Ron Nelson’s jubilant “Ring Out, Wild Bells” and will be
followed by Johannes Brahms’ sublime “Liebeslieder Waltzes”, op. 52.
The second part of the
concert will offer regional premieres of a variety of a cappella works from
recent years, including the translucent I
Will Lift Mine Eyes (2013) by Jake Runestad, Three Hymns to the Son (1997) Steven Paxton which are based on
ancient Byzantine chant, Frank LaRocca’s serene Diffusa Est Gratia (2012), and Three Motets (2012) by Thomas Juneau
which will be featured on the JVA’s upcoming album, Gaudete.
The program will
conclude with intriguing newer works for chorus and piano, including the
vociferous Absalom (2011) by Jeffrey Cobb, the world premiere of John Conahan’s alluring Pie Jesu (2013) and the regional
premiere of A Bronze Triptych (2013)
for chorus, piano four-hand, and percussion by Dan Forrest, which features text
by Anthony Silvestri describing the transformation of bronze from a metal of
war to a metal of peace and understanding. It is a powerful work full of
mystery, power and grandeur.
